Sunday Chat: Good Works or Not?? What the Bible Really Says About Salvation

God saved you by his grace when you believed.

 And you can’t take credit for this;

it is a gift from God.

Salvation is not a reward for the good things

we have done, so none of us can boast about it.

Ephesians 2:8-9

But Jesus said, “Let the children come to me.

Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven

belongs to those who are like these children.”

Matthew 19:14

That even though we were dead because of our sins,

he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead.

It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!

Ephesians 2:5

Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight.

He did this through Christ Jesus

when he freed us from the penalty for our sins.

Romans 3:24

We believe that we are all saved the same way,

by the undeserved grace of the Lord Jesus.”

Acts 15:11

But if it is by grace, it is no longer

on the basis of works;

otherwise grace would no longer be grace.

Romans 11:6

For God saved us and called us to live a holy life.

He did this, not because we deserved it,

but because that was his plan from before

the beginning of time to show us his grace

through Christ Jesus.

2 Timothy 1:9

Well then, since God’s grace has set us free from the law,

does that mean we can go on sinning? Of course not!

Romans 6:15

In the same way, let your light shine before others,

so that they may see your good works and

give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Matthew 5:16

And as God’s grace reaches more and more people,

there will be great thanksgiving,

and God will receive more and more glory.

2 Corinthians 4:15

This same Good News that came to you

is going out all over the world.

It is bearing fruit everywhere by changing lives,

just as it changed your lives from the day

you first heard and understood the truth

about God’s wonderful grace.

Colossians 1:6

And you yourself must be an example to them

by doing good works of every kind.

Let everything you do reflect the integrity

and seriousness of your teaching.

Teach the truth so that your teaching

can’t be criticized. Then those who oppose us

will be ashamed and have nothing bad to say about us.

Titus 2:7-8

I have given you an example to follow.

Do as I have done to you.

John 3:15

In the same way, let your good deeds

shine out for all to see,

so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.

Matthew 5:16

Sunday Chat June: The Two Most Wasted Emotions

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just

and will forgive us our sins and purify us

from all unrighteousness.

1 John 1:9

“That is why I tell you not to worry

about everyday life whether you have

enough food and drink,

or enough clothes to wear.

Isn’t life more than food,

and your body more than clothing?

Look at the birds.

They don’t plant or harvest or

store food in barns,

for your heavenly Father feeds them.

And aren’t you far more valuable

to him than they are?

 Can all your worries add

a single moment to your life?

Matthew 6:25-27

Be thankful in all circumstances,

for this is God’s will for you

who belong to Christ Jesus.

1 Thesselonians 5:8

Blessed be the God and Father

of our Lord Jesus Christ,

the Father of mercies and God of all comfort,

who comforts us in all our affliction,

so that we may be able to comfort those

who are in any affliction,

with the comfort with which we ourselves

are comforted by God.

Corinthians 1:3-4

We can rejoice, too,

when we run into problems and trials,

for we know that they help us develop endurance.

And endurance develops strength of character,

and character strengthens our confident

hope of salvation. And this hope will not

lead to disappointment. For we know

how dearly God loves us,

because he has given us the Holy Spirit

to fill our hearts with his love.

Romans 5:3-5

Sunday Chat: Knowing God's Purpose in Your Life | Finding Clarity and Direction

Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Colossians 3:23

And even when you ask,

you don’t get it because your motives

are all wrong you want only what

will give you pleasure.

James 4:2-3

A new command I give you:

Love one another.

As I have loved you,

so you must love one another.

By this everyone will know

that you are my disciples,

if you love one another.

John 13:34-35

Love each other with genuine affection,

and take delight in honoring each other.

Romans 12:10

Love is patient, love is kind.

It does not envy, it does not boast,

it is not proud.

It does not dishonor others,

it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered,

it keeps no record of wrongs.

Love does not delight in evil

but rejoices with the truth.

It always protects, always trusts,

always hopes, always perseveres.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

Jesus replied,

“‘You must love the Lord your God

with all your heart, all your soul,

and all your mind.

This is the first and greatest commandment.

A second is equally important:

‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

Matthew 22:37-39

Sunday Chat: Prayer

Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us today the food we need, and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us. And don’t let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one. Matthew 6:9-13

Yet you don’t have what you want

because you don’t ask God for it.

And even when you ask,

you don’t get it because your motives

are all wrong you want only what

will give you pleasure.

James 4:2-3

“So I say to you:

Ask and it will be given to you;

seek and you will find;

knock and the door will be opened to you.

Luke 11:9

Therefore I tell you,

whatever you ask for in prayer,

believe that you have received it,

and it will be yours.

Mark 11:24

And I will do whatever you ask in my name,

so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

John 14:13-14

If you remain in me and my words remain in you,

ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

John 15:7

If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”

Matthew 21:22

If you, then, though you are evil,
know how to give good gifts
to your children, how much more
will your Father in heaven
give good gifts to those who ask him!
Matthew 7:11

Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.
Psalm 139:23-24

Sunday Chat: Election Results / Lessons From Daniel

Young men without any physical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace. He was to teach them the language and literature of the Babylonians. The king assigned them a daily amount of food and wine from the king’s table. They were to be trained for three years, and after that they were to enter the king’s service. Daniel 1: 4-5

When Arioch, the commander of the king’s guard, had gone out to put to death the wise men of Babylon, Daniel spoke to him with wisdom and tact. He asked the king’s officer, “Why did the king issue such a harsh decree?” Arioch then explained the matter to Daniel. At this, Daniel went in to the king and asked for time, so that he might interpret the dream for him. Then Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his friends He urged them to plead for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that he and his friends might not be executed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. During the night the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision. Then Daniel praised the God of heaven Daniel 2:14-19

Now when you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe and all kinds of music, if you are ready to fall down and worship the image I made, very good. But if you do not worship it, you will be thrown immediately into a blazing furnace. Then what god will be able to rescue you from my hand?” Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to him, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us Your Majesty’s hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.” Then Nebuchadnezzar was furious with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and his attitude toward them changed. He ordered the furnace heated seven times hotter than usual 20 and commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and throw them into the blazing furnace. Daniel 3:15-20

‘This is what the dream means, Your Majesty, and what the Most High has declared will happen to my lord the king. You will be driven from human society, and you will live in the fields with the wild animals. You will eat grass like a cow, and you will be drenched with the dew of heaven. Seven periods of time will pass while you live this way, until you learn that the Most High rules over the kingdoms of the world and gives them to anyone he chooses. But the stump and roots of the tree were left in the ground. This means that you will receive your kingdom back again when you have learned that heaven rules. Daniel 4:25-26

“‘King Nebuchadnezzar, please accept my advice. Stop sinning and do what is right. Break from your wicked past and be merciful to the poor. Perhaps then you will continue to prosper.’ Daniel 4:25-27

So they concluded, “Our only chance of finding grounds for accusing Daniel will be in connection with the rules of his religion.” Give orders that for the next thirty days any person who prays to anyone, divine or human except to you, Your Majesty will be thrown into the den of lions. Daniel 6:5 But when Daniel learned that the law had been signed, he went home and knelt down as usual in his upstairs room, with its windows open toward Jerusalem. He prayed three times a day, just as he had always done, giving thanks to his God. Daniel 6:10 Hearing this, the king was deeply troubled, and he tried to think of a way to save Daniel. He spent the rest of the day looking for a way to get Daniel out of this predicament. Daniel 6:14

Then the king returned to his palace and spent the night fasting. He refused his usual entertainment and couldn’t sleep at all that night. Very early the next morning, the king got up and hurried out to the lions’ den. When he got there, he called out in anguish, “Daniel, servant of the living God! Was your God, whom you serve so faithfully, able to rescue you from the lions?” Daniel answered, “Long live the king! My God sent his angel to shut the lions’ mouths so that they would not hurt me, for I have been found innocent in his sight. And I have not wronged you, Your Majesty.” The king was overjoyed and ordered that Daniel be lifted from the den. Not a scratch was found on him, for he had trusted in his God. Then the king gave orders to arrest the men who had maliciously accused Daniel. He had them thrown into the lions’ den, along with their wives and children. The lions leaped on them and tore them apart before they even hit the floor of the den. Daniel 6:18-24

So Daniel prospered during the reign of Darius and the reign of Cyrus the Persian. Daniel 6:28

Why are the nations so angry? Why do they waste their time with futile plans? The kings of the earth prepare for battle; the rulers plot together against the Lord and against his anointed one. “Let us break their chains,” they cry, “and free ourselves from slavery to God.” But the one who rules in heaven laughs. The Lord scoffs at them. Psalm 2:1-4

I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth. For, there is one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity the man Christ Jesus. He gave his life to purchase freedom for everyone. 1 Timothy 2:1-6

Pray without ceasing!

Scripture #1 - Memorizing Scripture

This is my scripture that I have picked for the first week of our four weeks of memorizing scripture. You need to pick a verse that resonates for you - it could be the same as mine but please share what your verse is for this week.

The reason I picked this verse is it captures so much - Paul was in a Roman prison facing a possible death sentence when he wrote this. Wow. That puts my 'troubles' into perspective but also makes me realize your faith helps you pick your attitude - he has written so many encouraging scriptures from his time in prison. It also captures so much:

1. Don't worry

2. Pray about everything

3. Ask for what you need

4. Be grateful for all things

I want this verse imprinted in my heart. What is your verse for week one?

What Is Your Purpose Part II

Be still and know that I am God

And give thanks for everything to
God the Father in the name of

you are called to live in peace.
And always be thankful.

Since we are receiving a Kingdom that is unshakable,
let us be thankful and please God
by worshiping him with holy fear and awe.

is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the
one and only Lord. And you must love the Lord
your God with all your heart,
all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.
The second is equally important:
 ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
No other commandment is greater than these.”
Mark 12:29-31

In the same way,
you wives must accept the authority of your husbands.

your godly lives will speak to them without any words.
They will be won over by observing your pure and reverent lives.
1 Peter 3:1-2

Then Peter came to him and asked,
“Lord, how often should I forgive someone

“but seventy times seven!
Matthew 18:21-22

So be careful how you live.
Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise.
Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days.
Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand
what the Lord wants you to do.
Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life.
Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit,
singing psalms and hymns and
spiritual songs among yourselves,
and making music to the Lord in your hearts.
And give thanks for everything to
God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 5: 15-20

submit to all human authority
whether the king as head of state,
or the officials he has appointed.
For the king has sent them to punish those
who do wrong and to honor those who do right.
It is God’s will that your honorable lives
should silence those ignorant people
who make foolish accusations against you.
For you are free, yet you are God’s slaves,
so don’t use your freedom as an excuse to do evil.
Respect everyone, and love the family of believers.
Fear God, and respect the king.
1 Peter 2:13-17

Those who remain in me, and I in them,
will produce much fruit.
For apart from me you can do nothing.

to show you my power,
so that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth.
John 16:4-5

Work hard to prove

into the eternal Kingdom of our
Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
2 Peter 1:10-11

Dear friends,

work at it with all your heart,
as working for the Lord, not for human masters,

do it all for the glory of God.
1 Corinthians 10:31

Each of you should use whatever gift
you have received to serve others,
as faithful stewards of God’s grace
in its various forms.
If anyone speaks, they should do so
as one who speaks the very words of God.
If anyone serves, they should do so with
 the strength God provides,
so that in all things
God may be praised through Jesus Christ.
To him be the glory and the power
for ever and ever. Amen.

But it is the same God who
uses all these ways in all people.

in one way or another for the good of all.

Remember that your family of believers
all over the world
is going through the same kind
of suffering you are.

For to you it has been granted
for Christ’s sake,
not only to believe in Him,
but also to suffer for His sake

Beloved, do not be surprised
at the fiery trial
when it comes upon you to test you,
as though something strange
were happening to you.
1 Peter 4:12

as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.

Jesus replied,
“You do not realize now
what I am doing,

Count it all joy, my brothers,
when you meet trials of various kinds,
for you know that the testing of your
faith produces steadfastness.
And let steadfastness have its full effect,
that you may be perfect and complete,
lacking in nothing.

that pleases God,
